Pilates is a great form of exercise that focuses on working the entire body and is suitable for individuals of all ages and ranges. It was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who was working to develop an exercise form which focused on the body and mind, as he believed that the latter were linked.

Pilates focuses on multiple aspects of the body – including breath, mind-muscle connection, strength, coordination, and balance, all of which flow into one another and work together to create a stable foundation for which the body moves and allows us to complete our daily activities of living, work, and participate in sport.

Pilates can involve the use of apparatus’ such as a reformer or trapezius table, which use springs as a form of resistance to then load the muscles up and get the body working. Pilates can also be completed without the use of apparatus and can incorporate other equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, or even just body weight as a means of resistance.

Therefore, Pilates covers a wide range of exercises and serves as a great alternative to other forms of exercise which may have a higher risk associated with it, or those who are looking for other forms of exercise which they haven’t tried before.

At BSPC, we incorporate Pilates into our physiotherapy treatment, as it allows us to utilise a wide range of equipment and exercises to create tailored programs for individuals of all ages and abilities. Due to its versatility and focus on creating a strong foundation, Pilates can be utilised in many injuries, from office worker back pain, to athletes returning to high level sport.

At BSPC we use Pilates as part of our individual 1:1 physiotherapy treatment, but we also run small, tailored classes for all ranges of individuals with different injuries or conditions which may still require physiotherapy.

Whether you are currently dealing with an injury OR you’re wanting to join the world of Pilates – book an appointment with one of our physiotherapists who will work with you to achieve your goals and ensure you get the best outcome!
